Democracy Skills Workshops:
Introducing Citizen Advocacy

 

Join this workshop series to learn about becoming a more effective citizen. This 6-week course is designed to be co-taught by an educator and an activist in each community
, neighbourhood or school.

Learn to:

  • Participate more effectively in your community
  • Work with others on topics of common concern

Understand:

  • How government and corporations really work and ways in which citizens can influence them
Course outline:

Week 1:
Democracy in the Making

  • Define and clarify key concepts and terminology
  • Illustrate grassroots democracy with real life examples
Week 2:
Understanding the Context
  • Understand how governments really work
  • Understand the nature of corporations
  • Understand the emergence of international organizations
Week 3:
Organizing for Change
  • Learn the steps of decision making process
  • Learn how to define and frame issues as steps in preparing strategy
  • Assess tactics for working with others
Week 4:
Developing and Applying Strategies
  • Learn how to be strategic, to plan and follow through
  • Learn techniques for problem solving and decision making
  • Explore ways to access and influence decision makers

Week 5:
Participation Techniques
  • Consider the impoact of traditional and contemporary techniques for citizen participation
  • Learn how to get media attention
  • Use technology for research and networking
Week 6:
Putting It All Together
  • Assessing the workshops; learning from each other
  • Identify areas that need further development
